Personal Parking

Personal Parking (PP) is a proposal for a smartphone application that offers location based information about the parking restrictions in public roads and about the locations and costs of car parks.

The main screen view shows a street map which includes coloured paths denoting the parking restrictions that apply on specific road segments (ex. resident parking, single yellow lines etc). A detailed list of the enforcement times for that specific area/ parking zone is displayed on the bottom half which is partially transparent and superimposed on the map.

“Can I Park Here” is one of the three main features of the app which helps users to comply with regulations and to avoid parking tickets. It uses GPS input to identify the users’ location, it checks the parking restrictions that apply there and compares it to his personal profile offering a quick and clear safety check on the legality of parking.

The other two main features are “Input New Location” and “Browse Current Location”.  These allow users to request information on areas that they plan to visit or on their current locations.

“Ticket Alert” is a feature based on user-driven content. It personifies the PP social contract, as it allows PP users in the vicinity to notify each other when they spot a parking attendant issuing a parking ticket.

“Free Parking Space” is a likely feature based on user-driven content. When a user leaves a parking space a push notification informs other PP users in the vicinity about the location of the free space and about the restrictions that apply there.

Personal Parking was originally conceived as a service that would be offered through satellite navigation systems. The following is an interactive prototype developed in 2001.
